What if sustainability begins before the fabric is even woven?
When we think about sustainable fabrics, most of us picture recycled garments or fabrics, biodegradable textiles or pieces that can be composted at the end of their life.
But what if sustainability considerations begin much earlier?
Imagine a scenario where long before a textile is spun, woven, knitted or a fabric sewn, important decisions have already been made. So, how the fibre is grown, the chemicals used during processing, the dyes applied, the finishing treatments, and even whether natural fibres are blended with synthetic ones. These can all influence the environmental impact of the finished textile.
These early choices can affect not only how a product performs, but also how safely it can return to nature at the end of its useful life.

Sustainable textile terminology – what does it actually mean?
The world of sustainable textiles is full of labels and certifications. They all have value, but they don't always mean the same thing.
Here are some of the most common terms.
· Organic
· OEKO-TEX® Certified
· GOTS
· Antimicrobial
· Biodegradation
· Ecosystems
Organic
Organic fibres, such as organic cotton, are grown without the routine use of synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. Farming methods are designed to support healthier soils, biodiversity and reduced environmental impact.
OEKO-TEX® Certified
OEKO-TEX® certification involves rigorous test, by independent laboratories, to ensure textile or leather products are free of harmful levels of over 1,000 toxic chemicals and synthetic substances. The different tests focus on consumer safety to ensure that fabrics are safe for direct contact with the skin.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
GOTS goes further than organic fibre production. It covers environmental and social criteria throughout textile processing, from spinning and dyeing to manufacturing.
Antimicrobial
Textiles are impregnated with chemicals to destroy or inhibit the growth of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites.
Biodegradation
The change of complex substances by microorganisms into smaller, simpler, ideally non-toxic mixes. The process is affected by physical form and chemical structure of the textile and the environmental conditions.
Ecosystems
This is a community where animals, plants, other organisms, along with weather and landscape, work together to support life.
The part we rarely see
A textile's environmental story is influenced by far more than the fibre itself. Demands to; Improve crop performance, alter a textiles appearance, make them behave differently, improve their durability, appeal and performance.
Dyeing a textile, adding a finish or mixing textile fibres do enhance the finished product, but can reduce their ability to biodegrade.
Dyes
Colouring fabrics requires water, energy and chemicals.
Dyeing can change a relatively low-impact fibre into a much higher-impact product, particularly when it uses large volumes of heated water, salts, auxiliaries and coal- or gas-generated steam.
For example, batch dyeing can use approximately 150 litres of water per kilogram of fabric and identifies dyeing and finishing as significant contributors to water pollution.
Some dyeing processes have significantly lower environmental impacts than others through reduced water consumption, safer chemistry or improved wastewater treatment. These range from low-impact synthetic dyes, natural dyes, digital pigment printing to recycled-colour or mixed-fibre design. Then again mass-coloured or solution-dyed textiles can save water compared with conventional piece dyeing.
There isn’t a perfect solution as many of these processes have limitations or trade-offs. Their lower impact does not mean impact-free; wastewater, energy and unused dye still require control.

Finishing treatments
Chemical finishes are applied after or during fabric formation to change how a fabric behaves. Finishes can improve softness, handle, shrinkage, crease resistance, stain resistance, flame performance, water repellencey or antimicrobial behaviour. While they may improve durability and reduce washing, they can also introduce persistent chemicals, obstruct recycling or release substances during use and washing.
For example - Easy-care or crease-resistant finish, used for travel accessories, shirts table linens, may reduce ironing, but conventional formaldehyde-releasing chemistry can create health and wastewater concerns. Also, affecting ecosystems.
Another example, is silicone or polyurethane coating, used for bags, table mats and laminated décor fabrics. Whilst these improve water resistance and structure, they create a composite that may be difficult to recycle or biodegrade.
Understanding these trade-offs helps us make better informed choices.

Fiber blends
There is an upside and downside to blending fibers. A blend can be more sustainable than a single fiber if it makes the item last longer or reduces washing, drying, and replacement frequency. For example, a linen-cotton blend may wrinkle less and wear better than pure linen. Conversely, a blend like natural fiber plus polyester can improve strength and washability, but it may reduce compostability or biodegradability and end-of-life circularity compared with a single fiber fabric.
As consumers, it is worth asking not only what is the textile made from, and what has been added to it?

Why end-of-life still matters
In Blog 9 we explored how natural fibres can biodegrade under suitable conditions.
It's worth remembering that biodegradation is influenced by several factors, including:
- moisture
- oxygen
- temperature
- microorganisms
- industrial versus home composting conditions
- dyes, finishes and fibre composition
No textile simply disappears overnight, and not every product is suitable for composting. Understanding these differences helps avoid unrealistic expectations and encourages more responsible disposal.

Looking ahead: the Digital Product Passport
One of the most exciting developments for sustainable textiles is the introduction of the Digital Product Passport (DPP).
A Digital Product Passport could include information such as:
- fibre composition
- where materials originated
- manufacturing information
- certifications
- repair guidance
- recycling recommendations
- environmental data
Although implementation will happen gradually over the coming years, the aim is straightforward: to provide greater transparency about products throughout their lifecycle.
For consumers, this should make comparing products easier. For businesses, it encourages greater accountability and supports circular economy principles by making products easier to repair, reuse and recycle.
Transparency is becoming just as important as sustainability itself.

True sustainability isn't about a single material or one environmental claim.
It's about considering the whole journey.
From responsible sourcing and safer processing...
...to designing products that last...
...to helping customers understand how to care for, repair and eventually recycle or responsibly dispose of them.
This is where circular thinking becomes so important.
Rather than the traditional "take, make and dispose" model, circularity encourages us to keep materials in use for as long as possible, recovering their value wherever we can.
Every better decision made at the beginning of a product's life creates more opportunities at the end.

My love for textiles and making started long before I ever imagined creating a sustainable brand.
One of my earliest memories is sewing at infant school. I’d take my needlework home over the weekend, finish it as quickly as I could, and bring it back on Monday, hoping I’d be immediately given another piece to make. That joy of creating something by hand has never really left me.
I went on to study textiles and fashion, trained at the London College of Fashion, and worked in the fashion industry, gaining professional experience in garment technology and high-quality craftsmanship.
Later I ran children’s wear businesses and managed a fashion centre, so I’ve seen the industry from the inside — its creativity, its pace, and its impact.
Over time, I became increasingly disillusioned with the direction of the industry, the environmental toll of textile production and fast fashion. That awareness changed how I thought about materials, design, and what it really means to create responsibly.
NuBonelle grew from that shift in thinking.
